“Interaction between simplicity and airiness”

Location: Rin Kham Intersection, Chiang Mai

Owner: Amornsak – Wanida Punsurin

Architect: Sumeth Klaharn, Phongsakorn Na Pattalung, and Pisith Fungsuk of Materior Studio

“Privacy and a feeling of airiness are necessary for the living, but it is quite challenging to perfectly combine the two.” This is a reason why the house owners, “Amornsak and Wanida Punsurin,” let “Sumeth Klaharn,” their own son-in-law and architect from Materior Studio, come with designs for their new house. The exterior boasts simple white walls, while the inside features airily natural greenery, with a lively connection between the existing and the new homes.

This white two-storey house is their new house of which the designs were made based on the preferences of the owners, who wished to have a more spacious place to live instead of the existing 3-storey townhouse as the family members are getting older. Both owners decided to buy the house with a land located at the back of their old house and wished to renovate such house to be their new home in the future.

Built upon the new land yet connected to the old one.

However, the house on the new land is aged more than 30 years, so its structure is quite weak by now and they can’t imagine of later damage that may arise. As a result, the architect decided to pull it down and replace it with a totally new design. He also created a hallway and a spacious courtyard in the middle, connecting the old and the new houses, offering shades and bonding the relationships of the family’s members.

Exterior for privacy, interior for airiness.

Looking from the outside, the house is complete with simple white walls with not many openings on each side, we are quite surprised when stepping in the house, because it is actually spacious, airy, and very pleasant thanks to the surrounding green areas. These results are the intention of the architect who intentionally designed opaque walls to prevent sunlight and increase privacy levels, while the inside is completely open to the nature.

Spaces on the first floor were complete with all functions, ranging from a seating area, work area, and pantry, all together in the form of an open plan. Due to long span structure of which the length is up to 8 meters, it makes the space look specially wider with sliding aluminum doors allowing winds and connecting the new house to the old.

One good point of this open plan, apart from the feeling of airiness, is that the owners can welcome the visiting guests and interact with all the members even when one is busy on one own task. Amornsak can even talk to Wanida who is cooking while he’s working in another corner of the room.

For other facilities, including parking, toilets, or stairs, they were created and placed at the west to accept sunlight throughout the day in order to reduce heat with light openings only where necessary, such as in the toilet and the stairway, in order to ventilate the air and create privacy for the people who live inside.

You may notice that there are not many flooring steps inside the house as to be friendly to the members who are getting older. On the second floor, there is an additional bedroom for the daughter and the son of Sumeth.

The interior is simply decorated with white walls based on preferences of the owner, combining the floor, doors, and wooden furniture to create warmer ambience.

Interaction between the house and the nature.

Setting the garden at the middle of the house has made the living space be part of the nature, opening for natural light and winds throughout the day. The architect chose to grow a cork tree, because of its high trunk and, when looking from the inside, the high trunk will make the house look even more airy with shades from its leaves.

The openings in the living areas are installed with aluminum louver panel that can be slid open to connect to green spaces within the house or slid closed when privacy is required. In other words, it’s like something that helps secure the house.

Apart from the large courtyard in the middle of the house, there are also rock gardens and large opening designs to connect all the spaces inside the house to the nature and, moreover, to allow natural light during the day.

“For the selection of aluminum shutter frames, we particularly chose TOSTEM, because, apart from its soundproofing quality that increases privacy level, they also come in simple designs that fulfill the requirements of the house owners, making a perfect fit for the house. Moreover, the openings in the living space are specially wide (around 8 meters), but TOSTEM can design to serve the needs of its customer effectively,” answered Sumeth when asked about the openings inside the house.

Tips: In the case a special shutter design is required like for this house where the shutters are larger than usual, the preferred design should be submitted to the team of TOSTEM for further consultancy. The team will help you with the opening type or other details to optimize the functions for perfect fits.

Although the size of the opening may be equivalent to the door, TOSTEM can design perfectly with 3 locking system to highly secure the house.

“Before this, we were living in a townhouse. All the spaces were divided into floors, so the functions are completely separate. When we moved into the new house, there are several spaces that fulfill the needs of each member. Importantly, all of the spaces are connected as one,” Mr. Sumeth told us when being asked about the positive changes. Apart from making the house look airy and comfortable, it also strengthens the relationships of family’s members through designs under the shade of the nature.
